Equipment

  • Mixing Bowls
  • Whisk
  • Electric mixer (optional)
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutter
  • Baking pan (9x9 or similar)
  • Parchment paper (for easy removal)
  • Spatula for spreading frosting
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • 1-2 tbsp whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1-2 drops red food coloring or to desired shade
  • Sprinkles optional, for decoration

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper for easy removal. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  • Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Prepare the Frosting: While the cake is cooling, make the frosting. In a bowl, beat the powdered sugar, softened butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add the red food coloring, one drop at a time, until you reach your desired shade of pink.
  • Cut the Cakes: Once the cake has cooled, use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out individual cakes. You should be able to get about 8-10 heart-shaped cakes, depending on the size of the cutter.
  • Frost the Cakes: Spread a generous amount of frosting on each heart-shaped cake using a spatula. For an extra touch, you can add sprinkles on top of the frosting.
  • Serve: Serve immediately, or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. These cakes also freeze well if you want to save some for later.

Notes

Don’t Overmix: When combining the wet and dry ingredients, stir until just combined. Overmixing can result in dense cakes.
Use Room Temperature Ingredients: Make sure your butter and eggs are at room temperature for better mixing and smoother batter.
Cutting the Cake: If your cake is too soft or sticky, place it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes before cutting to help maintain its shape.
